Many off-the-shelf applications lock you into the visual design system of the platform, but there are also opportunities to create a good user experience or improve the user experience within the boundaries of the ecosystem. This initiative was to improve the user experience of my organization’s implementation of a financial forecasting platform. I conducted a heuristic evaluation to objectively evaluate key aspects of how an application works against generally accepted good practices for usable applications.
Each of my findings has a clear association with how it is breaking or undermining a user experience best practices. This to ensure objectivity from myself as well as from the potential audiences, especially those who might have biases towards the existing design. In addition to pointing out findings, I include high-level recommendations that still allow for collaboration and negotiation for the final design. I am not always able to work with teams from start to finish, so it is important that I leave enough information to guide them on the next steps, but still have enough freedom to make the best choices for their applications.
